Becky Ryan Photography Full Description
Hey! So I'm Becky, and I'm an alternative wedding photographer based in Derbyshire (shooting weddings across the UK and beyond!). What do I mean by 'alternative'? Basically I am not a 'traditional' or formal photographer. There was a time when wedding photographs were generally lined up formal family shots, and generally only consisting of images of people looking directly into the camera. I don't work to this tradition as I want to capture weddings naturally as they unfold and tell the story of each of my couples' unique days. I won’t boss you about or dictate how things need to go, and I specialise in shooting weddings for couples that want to do things that little bit differently. I’m not a photographer that would choose to take endless posed shots, I prefer to capture the natural moments of your day as they happen and tell it as a story from start to finish. I see the beauty in and enjoy capturing the little things, sometimes simple ordinary moments that play a part in your day just as much as the others. The little things that just make you guys you. It’s looking back through shots such as these that really put you back in that time and place to me and convey personalities, not the images created when you’re made aware of the photographers presence. I’m a naturally introverted person so a documentary style of photography is right up my street. As a result my style of photography is informal, unobtrusive, fun, romantic, natural, and creative, and with a limited amount of set shots/posed group images.

We can’t recommend Becky enough

Becky has taken our engagement (including our dogs!) and wedding photos which we adore! We have had so many compliments on them and they were exactly what we were after - we didn’t want traditional posed photos and instead she captured the day as it actually was! This year she came back for a family photo shoot with our new addition! We now have perfect photos to remind us of those precious first few weeks with a baby! We can’t recommend Becky enough and will definitely be using her again in the future!

We adore our wedding video...

We both knew we wanted Becky to photograph our wedding as soon as we saw her work, it is informal and relaxed with a vintage style which is exactly what we wanted for our whole day so it was a perfect fit. I normally hate photos of me but she always captures moments perfectly and I love them all, not only on our wedding day, but also our engagement shoot and a separate pin up shoot. I will always recommend Becky to anyone looking. She managed to capture so many moments we can't even remember seeing her there. We also adore our wedding video and have received so many lovely comments from everyone who has seen it, it even made my mum cry, which does take some doing!

Describe your style in 5 adjectives.

Natural, Honest, Heartfelt, Creative, Fun

What about your business are you most proud of?

The relationship with my couples. They're absolutely awesome and I really enjoy getting to know them and hearing all about them in the run up to their wedding, they're valued people to me not just clients. "Not only did we find a wedding photographer, but a friend too"

What is your favourite personal touch you have seen at a wedding?

One of my brides, Rachel, had a completely custom wedding dress that was made from the lace of her Mum's own one and was then reversible for the evening and was made with material from her recently departed Father's waistcoat. It was such a beautiful way for Rachel to have her Dad with her on the day.

What is the No. 1 photo that you think every couple should take?

There absolutely isn't one! As much as I love Pinterest, I think it can also be really harming to those planning their wedding photography! Especially if you are wanting natural, story-telling photography. Don't get carried away with 'must have' posed shots, it's not about that on the day. It's about you guys and your loved ones having an amazing time and it being captured in just the way that when you look back on your images in years to come you will be taken straight back there. You just don't get that with set up shots.

What do you recommend for a rainy day wedding?

Embrace it!

Describe how you got into photography.

I’d always loved to take photos ever since I got my first polaroid camera in the 90s to the bunch of digital 'point and shoot's I had between then and now, but having had my heart set on another career path as an artist/illustrator, but also not *really* knowing where I fit, I didn’t really think about the possibility of being a professional photographer. But now I’m here, it’s awesome! I know now that I was meant for this profession and it was meant for me. I asked another photographer if I could accompany them to a wedding in 2012 to take some photos myself and I really enjoyed it. I put the few photos I'd taken myself on my Facebook and on Flickr and I was pleasantly surprised to soon after have an enquiry from a Facebook friend as to whether I'd shoot her wedding the following year and also a stranger on Flickr who was a lovely bride to be looking for a photographer on a budget which I was more than happy to cater for as I was looking to add to my portfolio.
